Tommy Guerrero Summers
July 31, 2008 • 1:05 pm • POSTED BY stephen penningIn my adolescence I aspired to be a skater. Drawn to the skate culture of the mid and late 80′s (and by the fact that the skaters in my neighborhood were the so-called bad kids) it was something that I spent many summers pursuing but admittedly was never any good at. It was during that time period that I first saw the movie The Search for Animal Chin and became a fan of the Bones Brigade and specifically Tommy Guerrero. I couldn’t believe how easy he made skating look. Especially when I sucked so bad.
Time passed, I gave up on skateboarding and got into art and design. In my college years I really got into the art of Margaret Kilgallen and naturally Barry McGee. It was in the summer of 2001 when I saw Margaret Kilgallen’s work on a record by Tommy Guerrero. I couldn’t believe it. My skater idol turned rock star. Naturally I purchased it and that summer everyone around me heard A Little Bit of Somethin at least a dozen times. It is on hazy summer days like today that I find the perfect accompaniment being a little Tommy Guerrero.
