I'd venture a guess that within a few generations, consumption of physical goods as form of cultural merit badge will likely be cast aside entirely in favor of online credibility. Examples of this can seen today in social networking and online gaming. Further proof will come when the lack of resources makes it simply impossible to collect in the same way. (But wait, aren't collectors proponents of sustainability by nature?)

The Neil Stephenson in me also enjoys an alternate future where everyone's data gets magnetized, forcing us to bear the wilds of "IRL": http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qjpwnPW4c1o/SPSncGqSWwI/AAAAAAAAEKM/4729uzNCbUM/s1600-h/9278Little-StarWeb.jpg

You got it, exactly. This is excellent thinking and writing, despite the lack of proofreading.

You made me just throw my iPhone out the window, unfortunately our windows here don't open so it just bounced off the glass. Then I logged into Loopt, updated my location for all my friends to see that I work in advertising, then went over to eBay and ordered black, tortoise, and red Ray-Bans, then got on Last.fm and listened to every single band influenced by Mark E. Smith, then I found out that The Fall took their name from a Camus novel, so I hopped on Amazon.com and ordered The Stranger. Whew! Man are my digital wings tired.
