The Mets Lose Again

As a branding agency, we all know how important a logo is to an organization’s identity. That’s why it’s a little confusing as to why the New York Mets would introduce this logo for the team to don on their uniforms, commemorating the inaugural season at brand new Citi Field. It has immediately drawn comparisons to the very recognizable Domino’s Pizza logo and has already prompted an outcry from Mets fans.

The New York Yankees are also moving into a new ballpark next season and, while I’m certainly no Yankees fan, I have to admit that this is a classier representation of a (seemingly) classier organization.

In sports, perhaps the significance of an identity is somewhat taken for granted. Teams that have been around for so long, and with such national prominence, may find themselves forgetting that their fans take cues from how the organization presents itself. Although I don’t doubt the Mets took great time and care to design this logo, the organization’s credibility will suffer if Mets fans continue to view it, as one fan put it, as “amateur hour.” For a team that sometimes struggles with a “second best complex” (both in their own city to the Yanks and in the NL East to the Phightin Phils), the powers-that-be in the Mets organization might have given this one just a little more thought.

Pizza anyone?
