Does Facebook Ruin Lives?

I have heard this sentiment uttered numerous time over the past few years. I heard it when my roommate found out via Facebook that the guy she was seeing was engaged. I heard it when my Persian friend was forced into an engagement after another friend posted photos of her with the guy she was seeing secretly and the entire community was made aware of the relationship (apparently very religious Persian families do not allow their daughters to date at all unless they are engaged). Also, one of our university clients faced a difficult situation when high school seniors visited campus and photos of their wild partying ended up on Facebook. I believe their acceptance to the University was revoked. Now I have come across a very disturbing article about a man who’s wife changed her Facebook status from Married to Single, sending her newly ex-husband into such a rage that he murdered her!

Facebook does not ruin lives. People ruin lives.

Facebook holds and delivers information. And it can be used as a tool, Lindsey, like a cell phone, can opener or machete. Use it wisely.

    It’s Lindsay, not Lindsey :)

That’s right. As the old adage says: Guns don’t kill people. People with mustaches kill people.

  4. This topic is quite trendy in the net at the moment. What do you pay attention to when choosing what to write about?

I dont know that I would go so far as to say that it ruins lives but i do believe that facebook is a little played out. My roommate practically lives on facebook…the guy posts every little aspect of his life on facebook. Why? He cuts his foot on barbed wire, pictures end up on facebook….somebody cuts him off in traffic, he writes about it on facebook. Who gives a shit really??! Maybe I’m just not as popular as him or dont have as many “friends” as he does but i really dont understand it.
