Loyola Golf Outing

GolfGroup

On Monday June 29th, 160over90 sent a team of hackers to Caves Valley Golf Club to compete in the Loyola University Golf Invitational.

Armed with borrowed clubs, pony-tails, tattoos, boating shoes, and a bitchin’ pair of salmon-colored slacks, the team of underdogs descended on a course at which they had no business working the valet station, let alone digging up the pristine fairways.

The day started out as expected, with some last minute advice on the driving range, perfectly-cooked country club hot-dogs, and a bit of socializing at the club. We were then introduced to our unsuspecting caddies, Dave and Robert, who had no idea of the day of ball-hunting (see David and Robert below right) and sand-raking they were in for.

The format of the day was best-ball with handicaps.  That means that each person plays their own ball and finishes the hole.  The best score on the hole is counted for the team.  It allowed everyone to contribute, and a nice addition to this rule is that the team could take no more than par for any hole.  We started off a bit slow on the front nine, but still carded a respectable 32.

The foursome really hit our rhythm on the back and settled in nicely to shoot an amazing 27 for a combined score of 59. It wasn’t quite enough to beat the winning score of 55, but beside providing a good deal of comic relief, the Agency did finish a very respectable 4th out of 18 teams. That was good for a firm handshake, a cold Coors Light at the turn, and a “thanks for coming”.

If you have not yet done so, please add “golf with a caddy on an exclusive course” to the list of things to do before you die. It was a great experience, and gave even our most novice golfers a new appreciation and enjoyment of the game.  The four of us want to thank Loyola for inviting us and the agency for sending us to this great event. The clubhouse and dining facilities alone were worth the trip to this hidden location, and the team got to experience a brief glimpse into the charmed life that less than 600 invitation-only members call a weekday.
