The Communication Arts Design Annual 51 (September/October issue) will feature two of our favorite Loyola University Maryland pieces, the Sophomore/Junior Search Piece, which is printed on newsprint and the School of Education Viewbook. Whole Lotta Love

We’ve been getting a lot of love from some of our favorite pubs of late. Print Mag recently released its New Visual Artists Issue. Mikey Burton, 160over90 designer extraordinaire, was recognized and among the work they highlighted was spreads from the Loyola Viewbook. Jonathan Calugi, who we partnered with for the De’Longhi Artista Series was also included in this select group as was his laser-etched espresso machine.

The agency was also recognized in the 2010 HOW International Design Annual. In the 3D objects category we received a Merit award for the Optimism Script Chair created for Design Within Reach, Philadelphia. We also received a Merit award for Use Your You Viewbook we developed for Wheeling Jesuit University.

Wilkes University Wants You to “BE COLONEL”

Several years ago we worked with Wilkes University to launch a unique, award winning advertising campaign focused on demonstrating personal attention to prospective undergraduate students and their influencers. We selected specific markets and a high school senior from each that best represented the ideal Wilkes student, got to know them through a series of interviews, and then developed a number of very targeted media buys and messages aimed at generating buzz and raising awareness for the institution. Not only did it garner a significant amount of local and regional publicity, but even caught the attention of national media like The New York Times, MTV, and Fox News.

With the buzz of the campaign waning and shifting marketing objectives, it was time to re-concept a whole new ad campaign that could be used this fall and beyond. With the message of personal attention still at its core, the new campaign uses real stories of mentorship and hands-on learning to educate audiences on what it’s like to “Be Colonel” – a phrase that embodies the spirit of the university.

In lieu of bowling alleys, pizza boxes, fortune cookies, and other niche mediums used in the past, the new media strategy relied heavily on a combination of broad-based tactics like TV and targeted ones such as Facebook. All pushing people to a new micro site developed for the campaign, which houses the TV commercial and several longer videos detailing stories of personal attention, including a surprise stunt conducted by Wilkes’ mascot the Colonel.

Graphis Loves Our Boston Work

The agency recently received word that our work for the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) is being recognized by Graphis. The BRA brought us onto a team of experts tasked to help revitalize the Downtown Crossing neighborhood of Boston. From there we created the Downtown Crossing Executive Summary, a compilation of our findings on what makes the neighborhood unique and a clear strategy/vision for its future.

We’re looking forward to picking up the Graphis Annual Reports 2010 Annual book in January 2010 to see the Executive Summary alongside all of the other winners. Congrats to all involved!

Earlier this year, we received a few merit awards in the One Show Design competition that we’re pretty proud of. The University of Dayton Engineering Viewbook and the Woodmere Art Museum Logo are set to be featured in the December 2009 issue of the One Show Design Annual.

Congratulations to all of the winners! We love the recognition but next year… we want a few Pencils for our mantle.

Philadelphia Design Awards!

Recently, AIGA Philadelphia held its inaugural Design Competition/Exhibition featuring the best of Philly design. Promoting the design community, the show was aptly titled, PDA (Philadelphia Design Awards): Show Some Love. With almost two years of planning under Michele Cooper, chair of the AIGA Philadelphia Design Awards committee, we were able to accomplish and almost exceed all our goals for this awards show.

For the identity of PDA, my studio-mates, of gdloft, and I were privileged to design the promotional material for this competition. With the art direction from Allan Espiritu, Mr. CEO of gdloft, our latest and final collateral piece for PDA is the winner’s catalog. A total of five hundred seventy-six catalogs were printed, representing all (576) entrants to this competition. Each catalog is individually numbered (1-576) and has a different color for its cover, thus making each one unique. The show is held at Always by Design Axd so please come if you’d like a copy!

In retrospect, the past two years of planning have been exciting and encouraging. The work that Philadelphia produces proves that we should not be overlooked. Thanks to all on the PDA committee for making this a great success!

Greetings from 160over90: We Made This

Hello to all the new readers and subscribers who’ve come by over the past few days. For those of you visiting from one of our friends’ sites, we are 160over90, a branding agency in Philadelphia, and this is our Boomerang Table, where we store all of our heirloom ephemera. This blog isn’t all we do. In fact, most of us make a living creating other interesting things for clients.

Check out our main site here, or have a look at the video below for a taste. We just submitted it to the 2009 One Show awards (hey, handsome, beautiful and talented judges). It showcases some of the work we’ve done for Wilkes University, a great little college in Wilkes-Barre, PA. You won’t find this work on our main site, but we we wanted to share it with you anyway since it provides a pretty solid slice of the type of work we do in three hot minutes.
