I recently stumbled upon this map while scrolling through my favorite gossip blog (shown below as a small island floating in the Sea of Opinions). Naming almost every single social network, blog, file sharing platform, online game, communications tool and inside joke that the internet has to offer -and then mapping them out in a way that seems to denote a hierarchy of size certainly, and power and influence, arguably – this “Map of Online Communities” started to make me think about social media in a new way.
The idea of social media as its own world, quite literally mapped out, helped me see the current state and possible opportunities of online communication differently. Now, I’m no general or explorer, and have never been very good at the game of Risk, but the ideas of “uncharted territory” and expansion certainly comes to mind. Especially if you’re a brand vying for new ways to reach an untapped audience or if you’re a marketer trying to build from an up-and-coming media platform.
This map could certainly be used as a strategic tool for brainstorming sessions, inspirations for marketing plans, self pondering, market analysis and more. Think expansion and exploration. Incorporate ideas that will shift the borders, cause a little chaos and change the lay of the online land. Think of things that will change the communication universe. Use it for the obvious reason maps are created, to explore, and look into new communities or media platforms you’ve never heard of.
Or you could just enjoy it for the obvious reason: humor. Visit the sovereign state of OK GO Videos in YouTube, or the giant crater marking where Adult Services used to be on the isle of Craiglist. Explore the beauty of Duckface Mountains in Facebook or visit the space where the kingdom of Oh No They Didnt once resided and is now for sale (my ontd bbs know what I’m talking). Get your smug on in Snob Sound and end your travels with a laugh in the Sea of Memes. Just explore a little.
Feel free to check out the map more at http://xkcd.com/802/
Alright, I’m out. Currently setting sail for the Sea of Zero (0) Comments!

The San Francisco based designer Johnny Selman creates a poster a day for 365 days based on news headlines taken from the BBC website. His initiative is a reaction to online media becoming the number one medium for Americans to consume any sort of content or news and his desire to create more awareness for current global events by designing an engaging and interesting vehicle to communicate them.

A short film done by Mickey Smith and Allan Wilson with some amazing footage from the Atlantic coast in Ireland and the UK shot in Super 16 mm and digital with a Canon 5D Mark II. Although the film is not completely shot with the Mark II it still is another example of how amazing and incredibly versatile that camera is.

Our very own Justin “Angel Kisses” LaFontaine participated in the Jakes Food Challenge at 1:30pm. To say the least Justin didn’t make it through the huge meal, but it was an amazing treat watching him try.
For those of you that don’t know what the challenge is, it consists of two-foot sandwich (cheesesteak, pork, or brisket, four soft pretzels, an entire box of Butterscotch Krimpets or Kandy Kakes), 24 Peanut Chews and a Champ Cherry soda. He has to finish it all in 45mins or less.

The Social Network opens tonight, and from the sound of it, it’s shaping up to be a great story. So given the fact that Mark Zuckerberg is now richer than Steve Jobs, and Facebook is in meetings with Skype, and has all the social networking features Google only dreams about, the question to many young and jaded computer science kids will come knocking…
Turn on, Log in, Drop out?
Vivek Wadhwa doesn’t seem to think this is a good idea. In an article over at TechCrunch, he throws staticstics in the face of rebellion saying that while Mark and Steve aren’t eating ramen for dinner, there’s lots of reasons to go to school and finish it out. “The harsh reality is that for every Zuckerberg, there are a thousand who drop out of college and fail… Plus, if you look at the backgrounds of the people who actually built Facebook—the executives and employees of the company—you’ll find that they aren’t college dropouts; they are highly educated.” The Wall Street Journal seems to agree, pointing out how college is pretty worth it for the overall investment, while still some others say it’s only worth it about half the time.
So take your pick. But if you really want to walk in the flip-flops of the 35th richest dude in America, Halloween is just around the corner.
