The Mac(clesfield)Book – The Designer’s Choice Since 1500

Macclefield Open Book

Here ye here ye! The world of design hath a new font resource!

A medieval “portfolio”, dubbed “The Macclesfield  Alphabet Book”, was recently uncovered from the library of the Earls of Macclesfield in England, where it had sat on the shelves since 1750. This pattern book  contains not only 14 decorative alphabet styles, but intricately designed borders, initials and script.

Historians believe the book was used for one design/bookbinding house, as both a portfolio of sorts (imagine spilling coffee on this one…) and an apprentice guidebook.

While we may have thousands of fonts available for our clients at the click of a button, I’m sure they would be blown away if we brought something like this into a presentation to use for say, a new mailing piece. “This is the 16th century font we thought would be perfect for the cover…”

*Designers take note: The British Library is in negotiations to purchase this  rare pattern alphabet book for £600,000 (roughly $867,000).  Methinks you could get a pretty farthing for yours too.

TED 2009, Geniuses Gather in Palm Springs

On Tuesday the nations greatest minds gathered in Palm Springs to share ideas on how to improve the world. It’s the 25th anniversary of the TED conference, and because of the rising popularity of the TED website in the last couple years, this conference is bound to have the world following it’s developments. It’s one of my goals to eventually attend TED, but at $6,000 a person, I don’t think I’ll be attending too soon. Eventually I’ll get there, but in the meantime I’ll follow the happenings from my desk. A short summary of excitement and how you can follow after the jump.

Mykonos: The Video

My colleagues Uncle Kelly and Puberty Boy Brown can attest to the awesomeness of this song, for they were on hand at Johnny Brenda’s last year as the Fleet Foxes unleashed the full force of Mykonos.

FF’s front man Robin Peckinold enlisted his brother Sean to provide stop-motion duties for their latest video. Enjoy.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I gotta send this to my boy Michael Phelps. I’m sure he’ll be mesmerized.

Terraforming, painting, or aquariums of the gods?

Holy cow… these landscape photographs by Kim Keever seem to indicate she is in possession of a pen sized version of the Genesis Device, the terraforming rocket fired off in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. The best ones evoke the the grandeur of Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church’s work… Actually, these are staged in an aquarium, which for me, as an amateur aquarist, makes them even more impressive.
