Minneapolis Monday: Doomtree

Yes. So far I am posting my friends from Minneapolis. A bit nepotistic, perhaps…but you know what, that’s all good, because I’m blessed to have some talented friends in my hometown, and I’ll do all I can to spread those scintillating rays of Minneapolitan creative-culture at every chance I get. That being said, my buddies in the Minneapolis-based rap collective Doomtree are putting out thier first full-length crew album this week. After dozens of individual EPs (The False Hopes series), thousands of national shows and dozens of tours, it’s come together. I know I’m excited. Are you? It doesn’t matter.

Soundwise, Doomtree is a snake-oil prophet with white-plastic Frogskins enthusiastically selling you a peacoat full of cardboard boomboxes and the sharpest knives you’ll ever see. AND a good, heady conversation. The crew consists of frontman P.O.S., the rap-hobo” stylings of Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan, Sims, Dessa, deejay Turbo Nemesis, deejay and beatmaker Paper Tiger, beatmaker Lazerbeak and beatmaker, deejay and the team’s art director M.K. Larada.

Check out their myspace at this here link right here.

Time to let it be known.

Our Receptionist Is Better Than Your Receptionist

We all know that in the world of Advertising (or Marketing or Communications or Brand Conceptualizing or whatever the kids are calling it these days), image is everything. This starts from the top down. From the minute you first walk in the door. From this perspective, I gotta say we got you beat. Step down other agencies, for we have Phillip Wellbank batting in the leadoff slot. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure your receptionist is very caring, charming, and a general joy to all who enter your doors. Ours is better. If he can do this for our mailboxes, just imagine what he does for the rest of the office.

Notice how all the checks are evenly presented. Notice the love.

Help Us Help Russ the Mailman

Now that summer’s winding down, our nation’s mail carriers better invest in some good quality weightlifting belts. ‘Cause universities are gearing up for the fall recruitment season, and the 4,000+ college campuses across the US are about to unload more mail than ever. Search pieces. Viewbooks. Applications. Financial aid brochures. Window stickers. Pottery Barn catalogs (I kid). The reality is that your average seventeen-year-old will likely arrive home from her first day of school this September with her mailbox flowing over. And it doesn’t take a marketing study to guess where those millions of tons of paper will end up in a few months time. There are two things I remember from that period in my gangly adolescent life: opening my acceptance letter to Lehigh, and the night I dragged several garbage bags full of glossy mailers out to the curb.

So in the age of the Internet, Facebook, texting, and Twitter, why are so many schools still stuck in the old way of doing things?

SEE US IN CA

It has been a fun few weeks at the agency with the recognition we’ve been getting from industry pubs. This time around from Communication Arts for our Agency Brochure. There was a lot of late nights, bad Chinese food and heated arguments around this piece so it is rewarding to see someone give it a little love. Look for it in the November issue. If you can’t wait until then here is a sneak peak. High-fives to all involved.

Control

Last night I watched the film “Control,” a movie about Ian Curtis of Joy Division, based on the book “Touching From A Distance,” the autobiography of Deborah Curtis, Ian’s wife. Even for those that aren’t a fan of Joy Division, I have to recommend this movie, the cinematography is amazing, and the soundtrack is top notch. The director Anton Corbijn has directed a lot of music videos, including Metallica’s “Hero of the Day,” and “Mama Said,” but I believe this is his first feature length film.

The best though is Sam Riley’s portrayal of Ian Curtis, his voice is amazing, and he plays a much more sensitive and introspective version of Curtis than is seen in “24 Hour Party People.” Oddly enough, Sam Riley played Mark E. Smith, lead singer of The Fall, in “24 Hour Party People,” the movie about Factory Records. There’s one point in “Control” where the manager actually tells Ian Curtis, that it could be worse, he could be the lead singer of The Fall.

Definitely check this movie out, but  don’t bother with “Youth Without Youth,” Francis Ford Copolla’s first film in 10 years, that film was crap.
